How To Name Your Podcast
My friend Ben recently asked a great question:
Since it’d be hard to cover in 280 characters, I figured this newsletter was the perfect place to write about it.
Here’s how I chose “The Danny Miranda Podcast”…
I knew that I didn’t know. Meaning I knew that if I was going to do the podcast long enough, the only thing I could count on remaining the same was my name. Personally, I didn’t know the topics I wanted to cover then, so I figured, “Why not make it as broad as possible?” My interests are wide…. fitness, writing, technology, the future, entrepreneurship, media, and psychology. (It’s funny because even the name isn’t a guarantee to stay the same. See: Richard Alpert to Ram Dass.)
James Clear used JamesClear.com. Tim Ferriss created The Tim Ferriss Show. Joe Rogan has the Joe Rogan Experience. Sure, two out of three had name recognition to start. But, at one point, those names were meaningless, too. If they could convince people to watch or listen or read their thing, why couldn’t I do the same?
I also figured… people spend too much time on the name (and they usually use it as a way to procrastinate actually doing the work).
It might be worth noting that Anthony Pompliano’s original podcast name was “Off The Chain.” Lex Fridman’s initial podcast name was “The Artificial Intelligence Podcast.” Both have transitioned those titles to podcasts under their own names (The Pomp Podcast and Lex Fridman Podcast). You can do this too by owning a niche to start. I’m not sure what their reasoning for switching was or if they regret their initial name choices.
It could be useful to think about arbitrage opportunities — maybe with catchy names, phrases, or popular culture. But you also have to realize that the slang that was popular in 2012 wouldn’t necessarily be relevant in 2022. So that’s why I opt for something that will likely stay the test of time (my name).
You could also go for a short-term + your name. For example, “In Purpose with Jay Shetty.” Wait, I just Googled it. It’s “On Purpose with Jay Shetty.” I think that proves my point.
The name doesn’t matter. Just choose something and get going.
